Why Data Strategy Designguide Canvas?

Within the framework of Data Strategy Workshops, data & analytics experts design data-driven processes, products and business models together with business experts and IT experts. Numerous visualization and collaboration tools from the Data Strategy Design Kit are available for this purpose. Crucial for the success of such a workshop is the selection of the right tools in the right order to guide the design process accordingly. The Data Strategy Designguide Canvas helps you to structure and visualize the procedure in a workshop. Use the canvas in the run-up to a workshop to plan the agenda, at the beginning of the workshop to present the agenda, and during the workshop to document the progress.

What is Data Strategy Designguide Canvas?

The Data Strategy Designguide Canvas divides a workshop into different phases in terms of time and subject matter and defines time slots of 45 minutes each for the joint processing of specific tasks (in the sense of "time-boxing") that are necessary to achieve the goal. The time division is based on a two-day workshop:

  1. Top left: 1. day in the morning
  2. Top right: 1. day in the afternoon
  3. bottom right: 2. day in the morning
  4. Bottom left: 2. day in the afternoon

Each (temporal) phase consists of four time windows, i.e. a total of three hours of productive time each. After each two time windows (1.5 hours) you should plan a break (of 15-30 minutes) and between the mornings and afternoons a longer lunch break (approx. 1 hour), so that you have a workshop day of approx. 8 hours.

For one-day workshops, the upper half corresponds to the morning and the lower half to the afternoon. Accordingly, there are only two time slots available per phase.

The technical subdivision determines the order in which certain topics are to be discussed and treated:

  1. Intro: You should use the beginning of the workshop to introduce the goal, the procedure and the participants and to introduce the participants to the method and tools of Data Strategy Design.
  2. understanding business:then deal with the question why you want to use data and analytics at all. What are the economic goals of your company? What is the corporate strategy? Where can data and analytics add value??
  3. understanding users: Your project will only be successful if the users also use the analytics and the decision-makers support the project. It is therefore important to know the stakeholders and understand their needs in order to answer the question of how data and analytics can help.
  4. understanding data: once you have answered the "Why?" and the "How?", you can start thinking about what kind of data and analytics you need. First you need to know what data and analytics you already have and what you still need - and once you have answered the "Why?" and "How?", you can start thinking about what kind of data and analytics you need. To do this, you first need to know what data and analytics you already have and what you still need.
  5. Outro: At the end of the workshop, the results should be summarized and reviewed again before planning the next steps and developing a medium to long-term roadmap.

The phases "Understanding Business" and "Understanding Data" are taken from the Cross-Industry Standard Process for Data Mining (CRISP-DM). However, the "user understanding" is missing from the Design Thinking approach. All three dimensions are equally important for successful data innovations, because an innovation is characterized by economy, desirability and feasibility.

For the different (functional) phases, you will find the appropriate tools (canvas) for each of them on the Canvas Data Strategy Designkit. The Canvas Data Strategy Designkit divides the canvas from the design kit equally into the three phases and categories:

  1. Data -> understanding data. -> feasibility
  2. Strategy -> understanding business. -> economy
  3. Design -> understanding user. -> desirability

How to use Data Strategy Designguide Canvas?

How to start.
Start with the goal for the workshop: write the goal on a blue Stattys note and place the note in the middle of the canvas on the Target field.

Define the procedure.
Then go through the time windows clockwise starting in the intro phase and think about what you want to use the 45 minutes for in order to reach your goal at the end of the workshop. Write down the tasks on blue notepads as well. Take into account the respective (technical) phase in which the time window is located. You could start the "Understanding Business" phase, for example, by outlining the corporate strategy, analyzing the existing business model or examining a corporate process for optimization potential.

Determine the required tools.
Depending on the task, you decide on a tool from the Data Strategy Designkit. Write the name of the respective canvas on the notes or alternatively add another note. For example, the Strategy Pyramid Canvas is suitable for outlining the corporate strategy, the Business Model Case Canvas is suitable for analyzing business models, and with the Value Chain Canvas you can optimize processes.

Document the status of the workshop.
During the workshop you can document progress by replacing the blue notes with green ones. You may also need to reschedule during the workshop because there was not enough time or because the procedure proved unsuitable. Take the time to reconsider the procedure with the participants if necessary.
